You have chosen the right characters for your story. Now that you have the storyline down, it is time to let your characters battle the elements on a deserted island. The waves are crashing against shore and sharks are trying their best to eat your characters’ bodies one by one. But wait! But wait! Are you familiar with the smells of the beach? Are you familiar with the smell of the ocean? Are you familiar with the taste of the air? You might want to try it out before you write about it.
Recently, I’ve been reading quite a few short stories and have noticed a trend in more of them. All of them have real characters, but the setting is off-putting. I’ve read stories about a man who was caught in a winter storm. This is something I’ve experienced, but it doesn’t feel like it. The story was not realistic, the elements were flawed, the emotions were out of place and the setting was not convincing. Although the story was well-written and the characters were very convincing, the setting was terrible.
Location, location, location. It could apply to not only your business but also your story writing. It’s great if you have been to the place you want to write about. Get started writing! Here are some tips for writing about a place you have never been.
Search for Something Similar
You could visit a beach to feel the sand under your feet, smell the salty air, and get an idea of how your senses would react if you were on a deserted island. Although it isn’t perfect this will make your writing much more enjoyable.
Talk to someone with Experience
As with the story about the desert island, if it is difficult to get to a beach or you don’t live near one, you might talk to someone who has been to the ocean or lived on a desert island. Ask them questions about their senses and get them talking about it. Ask them about the smell, taste and other descriptive questions.
Do Research
Research is the most effective and inefficient way to get the information you want. Although it won’t provide all the information you need, you might be able to gain a sense of what it would feel like to live there if you read stories with descriptive words. You can also view photos and read news articles about that area.
Once you’ve chosen the right location for your story, and can describe it using all your senses, you are ready to create a short story that will capture the attention of the reader. They will be able to relate to your characters in the story and will return to you again and again to read your stories. Writing requires knowledge of the subject matter. Great writers know more than good writers. Look at the top novelists around the globe. Just imagine how much research they put in to reach their final work. You will be rewarded for your efforts.
